An “insider” shortcut guide to getting rid of both discoid lupus and systemic lupus, so that you can live a normal life again… by simple and inexpensive diet changes, not expensive supplements or products.

This is the most important book you'll ever read if you, or someone you love, has lupus.

My name is Jill Harrington, and I recovered from systemic lupus over ten years ago by changing the foods I eat.  I am not the only one, other people have done the same thing. Yet, you’ve probably been told that diet has nothing to do with lupus.

Eventually after years of being lupus free, I decided to share my story with you by writing a book. Most of the books about lupus are about “coping with”, “living with”, “dealing with”, or “learning to live with lupus”.  There's so little positive information out there about overcoming lupus and rheumatoid arthritis (or any autoimmune disease) – whether you read a book or find information on the Internet, the message is almost always one of gloom and doom.

I wanted you to know that people HAVE successfully overcome autoimmune diseases like systemic lupus, discoid lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis...and how you can do it too.

Lupus is one of the biggest challenges you will ever face. It cripples you with pain and robs you of energy.  You can't explain to other people how you feel... no one can really understand it unless they've felt this pain and exhaustion. The rashes on your face and body are miserable to live with.

But lupus doesn't just affect your body; it affects every area of your life. Often, you can't work or go to school. Constant pain and fatigue rob you of the everyday joys of life. Lupus affects your relationships. You aren't well enough to enjoy your friends, you can't play with your children and the daily difficulties of the disease can put a strain on your marriage.

You have probably been told that you must live with lupus for the rest of your life. Unfortunately, traditional treatments involve toxic medication that causes severe and potentially damaging side effects.  And to add insult to injury, often the drugs don't even help you feel better!  Many lupus and rheumatoid arthritis patients still battle with constant pain and exhaustion despite taking medication.

No wonder you are discouraged.

I understand exactly what you are going through, because I, too, had lupus. Today, it's gone. Let me tell you my story.

How I recovered from lupus...

In 1992 at the age of 32, I was diagnosed with SLE – systemic lupus erythematosus. My joints were swollen and painful, and I had skin rashes and frequent fevers. My fingers looked like the fingers of an old woman – stiff and curled with pain. I felt exhausted all the time.

I was told that no one knows what causes lupus, that there is no cure for lupus, and that I'd have to take medication for the rest of my life. I was also told that I would eventually need to take steroids - which over time would destroy my kidneys, and would then need a kidney transplant. The only hope offered was that maybe better drugs would be developed by that time.

I was so depressed.  Was this how it was going to be for the rest of my life? Days on end filled with fatigue and pain, having to conserve what little energy I had, with perhaps, a rare “good day” in between the bad ones? I had always been so healthy and active.

Despite my condition, I just couldn’t accept that I’d have to live like this for the rest of my life.  I began searching for something that could help. First, I went the traditional route, and consulted several rheumatologists. My father is an orthopedic surgeon, so when he recommended doctors to me, I was sure I was getting the best care possible. To my disappointment, I learned that the only thing that traditional medicine offers are toxic drugs that have really bad side effects.

I started taking the drugs, because I didn’t know what else to do, but I kept looking for other options. I tried homeopathy and acupuncture, but those methods didn’t seem to help me.

Two years went by and then a friend gave me a book to read. For the first time I read about the connection between food and disease.  Even though the book was not written about lupus or autoimmune disease, it seemed to make sense. I kept searching and found more information about the dietary connection to disease and to health. I eventually learned of doctors who had successfully treated all types of chronic diseases with diet. I read their books and articles, listened to conference tapes and continued to make small changes in my diet and lifestyle.

I didn't really know how much a change in diet could help me, since I had been told that diet didn't affect lupus. So, I "played" with diet, making some changes but not really committing.

In June of 1995, after a year of making small steps with dietary changes, and four months after tapering off Plaquenil, my lupus flared out of control. My sed rate (ESR lab test) was 98, and I could barely move (many of you know this lab test shows the level of inflammation in your body, and 98 is really high). My feet were so swollen and painful that they wouldn't even fit in open sandals.

I decided to get serious and follow the exact dietary recommendations I had been taught. Within a month, I got rid of all my symptoms and felt great! After three years of living with joint pain... suddenly I had none!

Since then I have not taken medication of any kind for lupus.  I show absolutely no symptoms of the disease.  At this writing, I’ve been symptom free for over 10 years

How you, too, can recover from autoimmune diseases like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis

I attended lupus support groups and shared my experience. To my surprise, most people were only politely interested. They probably thought that I was just lucky - one rare case. After a few attempts, I stopped going to meetings.

Eventually after years of being lupus free, I decided to share my story with you by writing a book.
I wanted you to know that people HAVE successfully overcome autoimmune diseases like systemic lupus, discoid lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis.

I felt the book needed to have multiple stories, so that you could see that my case wasn't just luck or coincidence. I called doctors who are experienced in treating disease with diet, and asked them to connect me with some of their patients who had regained their health from autoimmune disease. These people live all over the country and we talked for hours on the telephone. Everyone I talked to was very excited about sharing their story if it would help other people.

Their stories are complied into a book, titled The Lupus Recovery Diet. In addition to our personal stories, the book also describes in detail the diet that has worked for many; complete with recipes, scientific studies that have been done over the years and lists of doctors who have successfully treated lupus with diet. All with simple, ordinary foods…not expensive supplements or products.

The Lupus Recovery Diet may well be the most important book you will ever read, because it will show you that people have recovered from lupus. This information alone gives you hope and encouragement that you might be able to live a normal life again.

The stories of recovery in this book are not from “spontaneous remission”, but are the result of a specific diet and lifestyle program. The results have been long lasting. I hear from readers every day with even more success stories.

This book should be required reading for every lupus patient. After following this program for six months, I am no longer taking Prednisone, Plaquenil or Advil; my joint pain is gone, my skin looks great and I feel good. The book explains what works and outlines strategies for changing your lifestyle. I know it sounds too good to be true, but it's very true. The information in this book changed my life.
                                                                      Erica Harzewski

I found your book on the Internet. I downloaded it that day, started on the program  that day, and within weeks could tell that symptoms that had never disappeared were now disappearing.  After just 3 weeks, I was lupus symptom free with a sed rate of 1 and a CRP-neg. WOW - I feel great!
                                                                      Tami Finley, R.N.

I made changes to my diet a little over a week ago, and have started feeling results already.  I have lost most of my muscle and joint pain. I used to feel it all day, now I only feel a little stiff and achy in the morning.  Once I am on my morning walk, the stiffness is gone for the rest of the day.  Also, the butterfly rash on my face has faded.
                                                                     Jeanette Karr

I have lupus and am a twenty-six year old mother of three beautiful kids. I have not been able to open their baby food jars or even take them for walks. Everyone suffering from this debilitating disease knows what I am talking about, and I empathize with all of you.

Just eleven days after starting the diet I can open jars of baby food, and I have so much energy! I am soooo happy!! I played with my children today and I am crying tears of joy right now. This diet worked for me after six months of Cytoxan several different medications and three years of Prednisone with side effects. I am so thrilled to be able to type an email without frequent breaks. Love to all.

                                                                    Jennie Stansel

I can't even begin to tell you how much I appreciate your book and all your great information. Everything we read before your book was so depressing, and your book gave us so much hope!!!  We changed our daughter's diet less than a month ago and she has not had joint pain since!!  Her fatigue is so much better.  She looks good. She plays an awesome game of soccer.  The rash on her face is gone. To look at her you would never know she has lupus.
                                                                     Donna Turgeon, R.N.

I wish someone had handed me a book like this back when I was sick. I would have taken action right away, and it would have saved me three years of pain and agony!

The book contains 188 pages, consisting of:

  • Thirteen Personal Recovery Stories

  • Details of a Dietary Program that really works

  • Doctors who have successfully treated lupus with diet

  • Scientific Studies done on diet and autoimmune disease
  • Delicious recipes

What will You read in this book?

The Lupus Recovery Diet gives you a practical program of diet, exercise, and sleep; research studies that show a significant connection between diet and autoimmune diseases, details of a program that works, delicious recipes and resources for finding doctors and practitioners who understand the dietary approach to autoimmune disease.

First, this book gives you hope.  I’m not the only person who has recovered from lupus using this approach. You'll read about 17-year old Vanessa, who had serious kidney trouble stemming from lupus.  After changing her diet, her kidneys went from stage four back to an almost normal stage one.

You'll also read about Deborah, whose discoid lupus disappeared completely in just six weeks, once she began treating her lupus by changing her diet.  And there's Diane.  Diane, diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at age 35, had been trying to get pregnant for six years.  She didn’t want to take Methotrexate because she still wanted to become pregnant. Instead she followed the same program outlined in The Lupus Recovery Diet.  Ten months later, her health restored, she became pregnant for the first time. Today, she's the healthy mother of four children!

In Section One of The Lupus Recovery Diet you’ll read more stories like these.  These people applied the principles outlined in this book -- and changed the course of their lives.

In Section Two, you’ll learn about:

  • triggers of lupus and rheumatoid arthritis
  • the role of diet in lupus and other autoimmune diseases
  • the science behind diet - the safe, natural way to promote recovery

In Section Three, you’ll learn all the details of the program

  • what diet works best to promote recovery
  • what foods to avoid, because they are often the culprits behind your body’s inflammatory response
  • how to tweak the diet until you find what works best for you
  • why proper sleep is so important, and how much you should strive to get
  • how exercise helps promote healing, and what kind of exercise works best
  • how unhealthy stress makes the problem worse, and how to manage stress
  • details of an age-old, proven method, in addition to diet, that can jump start your recovery.

Section Four is a mini-cookbook, with menu ideas and recipes. The recipes use ordinary, inexpensive foods that you can get at any grocery store.

Section Five is packed with additional resources.  There's so much positive, helpful information out there to help you overcome your illness, and I got well because of the work of many outstanding scientists, researchers, and doctors.  That's why I've included this section, where you'll find:

  • A reference list of additional books, articles, and other resources that teach the connection between food and autoimmune disease.
  • A list of cookbooks that will help you eat for recovery while avoiding the foods that provoke your body’s inflammatory response.
  • A list of doctors and nutritionists who have experience treating chronic disease through diet and lifestyle.
  • A directory of retreat centers where you can go and have someone personally guide you back to health.

Despite what you may have been told, dozens of clinical studies published between 1979 and 2004 in prestigious medical journals such as Lancet and The New England Journal of Medicine demonstrate a strong connection between diet and lupus and rheumatoid arthritis - as well as other autoimmune diseases.

This book lists many of these studies, along with a short overview of the study findings.

If you are feeling that your situation is hopeless, there’s no reason to feel that way anymore.  The Lupus Recovery Diet gives you what you need to know to take control of your health and become well again.

You may already have a diagnosis of lupus or rheumatoid arthritis.  Or maybe you're struggling to get a diagnosis, but you've been told that you probably have an autoimmune disease.  Some of you have been told you have a "lupus like" condition.

The good news is that this diet and lifestyle is something that can help you now, even while working with your doctor to get a definite diagnosis.

After reading the recovery stories, the studies, and the clinical experiences, you will see that diet, exercise, sleep, and stress reduction can have a dramatic effect on autoimmune disease.

I was diagnosed with lupus a year ago, and read your book two months ago. I cannot tell you how much this has changed my life. I love it! The cravings were difficult at first, but I could tell my diet changes were helping.

After a short time I had my nine year old daughter eating this way with me. She has Diabetes Insipidus (very rare autoimmune disease). Her dose of medication used to last her five to six hours, and now one dose lasts her nine to ten DAYS. We were shocked. Thank you for sharing your experiences. It's evident that you really care.

I am 76 years old and have lupus. I am amazed how good I feel after just two months of changing my diet. There's a spring in my steps that I haven't had in a long time. Please send three more books for my grown daughters... they said they want to do what I'm doing - because I look so great.
                                                              Gwen Usher

My results from following your program have been impressive. My joint pain is noticeably improved. As a bonus, my resting heart rate has lowered from 70 to 55, cholesterol from 210 to 150, blood pressure from 140/80 to 100/75 and I've lost about ten unwanted pounds. This is the easiest "diet" I have ever been on, and these results let me know I am on the right track.

I am reading your book.  I am so happy right now that I have tears in my eyes. My sixteen-year old daughter had been hospitalized in August with toxic shock...and then in September for mononucleosis...and now here we are in October and the doctors are finally finding that she most likely has lupus...It looked like doom and gloom...until I Googled onto your website.  This book is a Godsend.

Will it help everyone overcome lupus?  Probably not. The reversal of the disease becomes less predictable once your body becomes permanently damaged by the long-term use of steroids and immunosuppressive drugs. However, many people can still improve their health and decrease their symptoms – even if they do not obtain a full recovery.

In other words, you will probably feel a lot better than you do now.

Once you read the personal stories of recovery - and you are inspired to create your own success story – the details and resources that you need to make it happen are in this book. I hope to include your story in the book’s next edition!

You may be worried about buying a book from the Internet.  Please rest assured that I guarantee your complete satisfaction with this book. Take up to six months to read the information. If you are not happy with your purchase, just return the book and I'll refund your money.
